Beginning January 1, 2024, San Francisco implements a "Vacancy Tax" on property left vacant for more than six months of one year. For now, this law applies to residential buildings with three or more units. The first filing deadline is scheduled to be April 30, 2025. It seems unclear at this time how much the punishment will be, or how the tax will be collected.
This law is a response by San Francisco's Local Government to addressing problems they themselves created through mismanagment of the City. Over the last several years businesses and people have fled San Francisco for many reasons. Some of which include crime, overwhelming homelessness, pollution, and predatory taxes. This law punishes Property Owners for San Francisco's Policy Makers turning the City into an undesirable place to live and do business.
